This past Saturday, I did something I've only done a couple of times since
"retiring" from the junk biz in June... went yard sale'ing.
It's funny how something can be so routine,
and then suddenly no longer part of your normal schedule or ritual.
I have to say, as much as I lived for and thrived on yard sales at one time,
I really don't miss getting up before the break of dawn on Saturday.
I do enjoy sleeping in a little that one day of the week!
I've been purging my closets and getting rid of stuff I don't use.
But after reading in the local paper about several yard sales that sounded really promising,
I set my clock, and before the sun rose, jumped out of bed and hit the road.
On my last stop,
I spotted the bluish-green satin glass vintage lamp, below,
and made a bee-line across the yard to grab it.
Another guy was also scoping the older pieces,
and I got to it before he caught a glimpse.
I absolutely a.d.o.r.e. this lamp!
Can you really love and be this crazy over a lamp?
I think I can... I think I am! :)
The lamp, with the shade, was marked $5.00!
I couldn't believe my good fortune!
I'm not sure of it's actual worth, but I'm pretty certain it far exceeds $5.00.
I didn't have an inkling where I would use the lamp,
but found the perfect spot in my bedroom.
And it's large enough that it almost covers the central intercom/radio system on the wall.
I enjoy learning the history behind pieces I buy second-hand.
The sellers said an older lady neighbor gave them several things to sell in the yard sale.
She told them to get whatever they could for the lamp.
They were almost apologetic for asking $5.00 for it! I didn't even try to negotiate! :)
The jade finial was not original to the lamp, but added later by the owner.
The openness of the brass and glass table works well in this space,
with the opposing large, lofty bed looming nearby,
but I regret that it is hard to hide the cords.
The tole painted book rack that sits under the brass table, was a find
from our trip to Hillsville, Va, The Annual Labor Day Town Flea Market.
You can read more about it {HERE}.
That was a great trip, and Mr. Ramblings and I scored several neat pieces!
The chinoiserie-type pillow was a consignment shop buy from years ago.
The chair was an oldie, updated with a coat of chalk paint.
I need to do a post on it...
I picked up a few more things Saturday.
...the $2 cozy, large afghan, a framed Christmas 1925 poem, by Barry Mason,
and a little wall basket that will soon be a Christmas project.
A vintage pink, rose table cloth in excellent condition, $2,
and a Homer Laughlin Virginia Rose small platter, $1.
The lamp really does work well in the bedroom,
lending a soft, serene ambiance to the space.
And I couldn't be any prouder, than if I'd spent $200 on it!
...which I wouldn't have, but you get what I'm saying, right? :)
Thanks for stopping by!
Hard to believe today is the second of a new month, isn't it? Enjoy your week!
~Rhonda

Thanks so much for the feature, DIY By Design,
You did great! I never go to yard sales and you are once again proving to me that I should. That's where you find unique things at nice prices.
ReplyDeleteHI Rhonda! Oh, I love love love that gorgeous lamp!! You found lots of great things.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Lots of cute things...but I especially like the tablecloth!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting me too! Sheila
Wow, what a lamp! I love the raised design on the smooth base - adds a lot of texture and color. Great finds.
ReplyDeleteWhat some great finds, love that lamp too!
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas poem looks so sweet. You'll have fun using it for Christmas decorating. I used to have an antiques business, and the secret was to get up early and beat everyone else to the yard sales. I agree with you that it got old fast and I didn't like that part. You were wise to wait until the really good sounding sales came up!

So many things to see! I haven't been to a yard sale in years. With a house full, I guess that is for the best. That lamp is quite the find and the color is scrumptious.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great lamp!! I like that throw too.

ReplyDeleteRhonda, what great finds that you spotlighted, but the lamp is fabulous! And $5.00 was a steal! Congrats to you! Happy Tuesday! Pam (everydayliving.me)
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteThe lamp is great. I had one very similar many years ago. It is graceful.
I have had several successful yard sales but I have never been to one....can you believe it? I just have to start doing this.
All your finds are wonderful.
Barb
I have never seen a lamp like this Rhonda, so unique! Looks great! Love the magazine rack too, you really have an eye for treasure hunting!

ReplyDeleteI love that lamp! How unique and beautiful....just so different....hmmm, exquisite is a good word to describe it! Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteHow lucky you were to get the lamp. It is absolutely fabulous. What lovely treasures you got on your garage sale adventure.
ReplyDeleteYour lamp is a keeper, it's pretty and unusual, that's what counts most. It looks like a bedroom type lamp, great on your console table. Looks like you really found some goodies, love tablecloth and that dish among your other goodies. It's just fun to find something you didn't know you really hankered for. Enjoy your goodies for long time. Happy weekend
ReplyDeleteIT's the thrill of the hunt, sometimes find really awesome stuff and others', nada. Have to practically tie hubs up to go yard saling. It's hard enuf to get him to thrift stores. I like to go to Goodwill on Wed, in Grand Junction, it's senior day, 15 % off. Hey every little bit helps. Its more the fun of seeing what might be there. The prices are kinda high at our Goodwill, still helping them pay for building (after few yrs).Somehow do manage to find something almost every time we go there but sometimes nothing strikes my fancy, it's the maybe that gets me there.
I did a lot of yard sale shopping when my kids were toddlers so I could find toys, clothes, shoes, etc. Last summer I don't think I went to any! Congrats on your good finds. Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteI go crazy over lamps, the small crystal leaded ones in particular.
ReplyDeleteI did a lot of yard sale shopping when my kids were small too. Now, it is strictly thrift shopping. No awful early morning forays.
What a great find--that lamp is gorgeous! Love the afghan too! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm!
ReplyDeleteThe lamp is beautiful, but I really want to curl up underneath that afghan! It looks so cozy :)
