Celebrating The Red, White, & Blue Picnic Style

Thursday, June 28, 2012

I was recently given the opportunity
to decorate a church dinner honoring our Senior Adults.

My Theme - An Indoor Picnic

Within just a few days,
I found the vintage picnic basket,
$3 at a local thrift store,
and the "picnic motif pitcher" used as a vase for the roses,
$2 at the Salvation Army thrift store.

Don't you just love it when a plan comes together??? :)

Rolled the utensils in red and blue napkins,
and added scrapbooking stick-on ladybugs.

For the tables,
kept it simple with live petunias, in red, purplish-blue, and white,
wrapped in brown paper bags.
The ladies took these home to plant afterwards.

Vintage blue Ball jars, filled with red stems accented the dessert table.
{Jars were found at the Carolina Country Peddlers Mall,
where I have a booth, for $3 each!  Seriously "heart" them!}

And since the 4th of July is right around the corner,
I scoured the internet for more
Red, White, and Blue Picnic Inspiration!

{All images below were borrowed from Pinterest}

Enjoy the Inspiration....

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.  You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.  ~Erma Bombeck

....and no celebration is complete,
without a super cute pair of shoes! :)

....enjoy your 4th,
and may God Bless our Great Country!

Roses on my Table

Sunday, June 24, 2012

"I'd rather have...

 "roses on my table..."

"than diamonds on my neck."
~Emma Goldman

The vintage Ball jars were found at the Carolina Country Peddler's Mall,
where I have a booth, for $3.00 a piece!

But, oh no.. the bargains for this arrangement didn't stop with the quaint jars.
The roses were purchased at Aldi's for $3.99 for a half dozen!
Cheap and beautiful ...music to my ears!!!

This arrangement makes me smile...
reminding me of my Grandmother Maybell,
who was known far and wide for her beautiful rose gardens.
They were her pride and joy.
As tight as she was, and she was extremely TIGHT,
she only bought the very best bushes, from a mail order catalog!

"Some people are always grumbling
because roses have thorns.
I am thankful that thorns have roses."
~Alphonse Karr

Crockpot Cheesy Chicken

Friday, June 22, 2012

Want to try one of my family's very favorite meals???

Crockpot Cheesy Chicken

Until recently, I was never a big crockpot'er...
But I've found that coming home to a crockpot meal does prevent me
from ordering out after a tiring day of work,
saving time, money, and stress! :)

Crockpot Cheesy Chicken

6 Chicken Breasts
or
8-10 boneless skinless Chicken Thighs (our choice)

1 Onion

2 cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese

1 can Cream of Chicken Condensed Soup

1 can Corn

Salt chicken lightly and put in the bottom of the crockpot.  Cut up onion and put over chicken.  Spread Cream of Chicken over chicken and onion.  Cover crockpot with lid and cook on High 7-8 hours.  A few minutes before the cooking time is complete, add can of drained corn, and cheese.  Mix together.  Serve over mashed potatoes (instant is just fine!) or rice.

Personal Note:  I add the corn and cheese, and then make my Hungy Jack Instant Mashed Potatoes, which doesn't take long, and seems to be the perfect timing for the corn and cheese to cook!

~enjoy!

The "Happy" Arrangement

Saturday, June 16, 2012

I have a fondness for tulips,
their delicate features and simple elegance amazes me.

A friend of mine has made me pinkie swear that when she passes,
which I hope we are both very old and very gray by then...
that no matter the time of year,
her funeral spray will be of tulips alone!
Sounds kind of morbid, huh?
Not really, she just adores and loves them that much,
...and you have to make plans at some point! ha!

My mother-in-law created the arrangement of tulips, below,
 for her door this spring....

She's just talented that way! :)

The metal basket for the arrangement was found at Home Goods
several years ago, and is hanging on the door by a large suction cup.

I took the pictures with my cell phone, which doesn't capture it's true beauty!

If ever there was a "Happy" Arrangement,
I'm certain this would be it!

having lost their's in the last few years!

"Jack 'em Up" Pumpkins Update

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

It's hardly the time to start thinking about Fall Decorating,
being that the official first day of Summer is a mere week away,
but I do have an update on the materials used for the pumpkins I created...

Ironically, I had another inquiry last week,
 about the letters and stickers.

The ones I used were purchased at a local garden center, for about $3 a piece.
But can also be found at many Hallmark or gift shops.
They are the vinyl sticky letters used on personalized license plates or wall quotes.

The dots were of the same materials....

While in Wal-mart over the weekend,
I noticed that the Cricut Vinyl Rolls have been reduced from $9.00 to $6.00.
Perfect, and a perfectly economical choice for the letters and dots!!!

I plan to use the vinyl material and my Cricut next year, myself!

So, if the decorated pumpkins are on your agenda for Fall 2012,
rush on over to Wal-mart!
Hopefully your local store will offer the same discount! :)

Latest Update:

Just saw the vinyl letters in Hobby Lobby!!!
Found on a turn-rack near the check-out! :)

O' Waterford...

Saturday, June 9, 2012

"How do I love thee,"

"Let me count the ways..."

I love thee for the simple, elegant beauty you add to my home,

And that you are timeless, in which one can never grow tired of your charm,

And that your legacy lives on, passed for generations,
such as the pieces I hold, found at an estate sale....

"How do I love thee....
...For the ends of being and ideal grace."

Excerpts in quotations taken from poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
1806-1861

Lake House Remodeling Complete...

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

...at least for now!

Is one ever really done with their home???
I already have a small list for projects to tackle over the winter.
But for now,
I'm sticking a fork in the upstairs remodeling of our lake house and calling it done!

Our lake home is a two unit duplex,
which works out wonderfully now that the kids are older.
They have their space, and we have our privacy. ;)

Four years ago, we remodeled the downstairs unit.
Over this past winter, we decided to list our lakehouse as a summer weekly vacation rental.
The upstairs still contained hurricane damage from 13 years ago,
that had to be completed before we could rent it.
The remodel that I presumed would only take 2-3 weeks, took 6!

The remodel was done on a tight budget,
furnished with refurbishings and items from storage,
 and lots of elbow grease!
I love the challenge of seeing just how far you can stretch a budget,
and repurposing "stuff!"

Such as the stool at the end of the bed below...
I've had the stool for about 19 years, a second-hand find.
It was used in Ashley's nursery
and was sponge-painted hot pink, covered with star printed teal flannel fabric.
Yep, at one time I thought it was just beautiful ...what was I thinking! ha!
It had been abandoned and forgotten until I was cleaning out the lakehouse attic a few weeks ago.

The stool was given new life, with a fresh coat of Annie Sloan's Duck Egg Blue Paint,
and new zebra printed fabric.
All materials were leftovers from projects for my junk booth,
so the cost was ZERO... don'tcha just love that!!!

This was the only room that received "new wares."
The new bed linens and pictures were purchased at Home Goods.
The one end table is a vintage safe imprinted with the original owner's name.

The original queen bed wood frame, purchased at an auction many years ago, was shot!
But the headboard was still in great shape,
so we salvaged it by sacrificing the footboard and buying new metal rails for the bed.

Old Porcelain Barber's Chair ...sure to be a conversation piece! :)

The lamp, once white, was also given a coat of AS Duck Egg Chalk Paint.

The list of repairs was long, but the major ones were,
the wood flooring had to be refurbished in the living room,
as well as the sheet-rock on the vaulted ceiling and walls refinished.
The dust was terrible!!!
Almost the entire upstairs was painted as well.
The living room and master bedroom open onto a covered porch facing the lake.

The large round mirror below, was one of the items resurrected from storage!
So glad I held on to it!

A small bedroom/loft overlooks the living room and kitchen.

The two recliners will hopefully be replaced with two leather ones over the summer.
The cute parrot lamp below was a yard sale find by my MIL.
...the coffee table and glass top round table were also second-hand finds!

The upstairs kitchen was just decluttered, deep-cleaned, and touched up with paint.
Eventually the paper border will be removed, but I didn't want to open that can of worms just yet!

This room was once David's nursery.
It was emptied, cleaned, and repainted.
The beautiful curved window bench was found at a yard sale for $20.00, and recovered.

The master bath upstairs underwent major renovations.
New flooring, new pedestal sink, new commode, and new paint.
....and sadly, I don't have any pictures of it.

Just a few pictures of the downstairs unit....

The Living Room Area

Above, the vintage ski-boat motor in the corner was found
during our December Anniversary trip to Asheville at an antique mall.

The whitewashed TV Armoire was a "new to us" find,
purchased at an auction for $70.00.

The downstairs kitchen...

Downstairs Master Bed...

Another bedroom, featuring beautiful coastal art by local artist, Ronald Williams.

The lake house lakefront...

The uneven poles to the left-hand side are awaiting electricity and lights...

Now that the house has been remodeled,
I'm hoping to enjoy a week or two myself in this beautiful, peaceful sanctuary!

Looking forward to sitting on the porch for a spell...

and relaxing!
...aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :)
