New Oldie Find for the Lake House - Antique Railroad Cart Coffee Table

Monday, September 21, 2015

If you follow along with me from week to week,
you might recall that Mr. Ramblings and I traveled to Hillsville, Va.,
Labor Day Weekend, to hit the Annual Flea Market and Gun Show.

Midway through the day on Saturday,
we spotted something that has been on my "junkin' bucket list" for years!

But first, let me share a picture of the downstairs living room at the Lake House.
The coffee table, below, was left behind by the previous owners.
The glass toppers were already missing by the time it came into our possession,
but it has served the purpose for over 18 years for us.

Back to Hillsville...
my husband and I were walking around from booth to booth,
and spotted five of the antique or factory railroad carts below, in a particular booth.
All of them had a SOLD tag on them, but one.

We've been looking for one of these carts for a long time
to use as an industrial style coffee table,
but it seemed when we came across one,
we were either driving a vehicle we couldn't transport it in,
or it was a little too rough.

The vendor that was selling these carts,
had completely, beautifully refurbished them, including varnishing the wheels
to prevent them from "marking" or damaging the floors in one's home.

As I was handing over the money,
another person walked up to inquire about them...
that was a close one, we were very thankful to get the last one available!

To style the cart, I just transferred what had been on the other table,
a vintage green bowl of pretty shells...

...and Weird Carolinas, by Roger Manley, that I picked up at a yard sale.
.
We often have comments from our vacation renters, that the book was a favorite,
which is a collection of odd folk tales, ghost stories, and strange urban myths about the Carolinas.

When Mr. Ramblings and I travel,
we're always on the hunt for unique pieces, such as the cart,
and the vintage boat motor we found several years ago,
while on an anniversary get-away to Asheville, NC,
at The Antique Tobacco Barn.

Our neighbors and family never know what we will
roll back up home with...
and frankly, neither do we!  :)

Thanks for stopping by to visit...
Hope your week is off to a great start!
~Rhonda

  10. My tablet wouldn't let me comment but I had to come back and tell you that I absolutely adore this coffee table! My family room would be perfect with something like this in it. I love seeing your treasures. The book is perfect for your rental too and I can see why the renters like it. Keep inspiring me with your finds!

  12. What a stunning find! I was shocked when my husband indicated he would love something like this for our coffee table. I really didn't think Mr. Conservative would go for this look. Now I'm on a hunt.

  14. Oh I really love your new cart coffee table! I've always liked those. You are right that they can be hard to find. I love going to Ashville SC and will have to try to go to that store you mentioned. My sister has gone there too and said it's awesome!
