Dining With The Fishes

Sunday, July 10, 2016

Did you know that many collectors of vintage,
collect things that remind or connect them to their past.
...items that evoke fond memories of people, places, and days long gone.

Such is the old cricket bucket below...

A couple of years ago,
I started collecting vintage minnow buckets to display at the lake house.

Somewhere along my travels,
I came across an old cricket bucket/box to add to the other relics.

One of my beloved Grandmother Mac's favorite pastimes was fishing!
She raised fishing worms on her farm.

As a little girl, I remember riding the narrow, winding country roads
with her in her old green, big-as-a-battleship Chevy Impala.
Along the way, we peddled dirt-filled brown cardboard containers
of worms to her faithful customers.

We also sold cartons of farm fresh eggs along the route,
but that's a story for another day!

Since she raised them, worms for fishing were plentiful,
but she also loved to fish with crickets,
and had a bucket identical to the one I found.

Nearby to where I grew up was a neighborhood lake,
and some pretty good fishing holes.

My dad was a traveling farm chemical salesman,
and occasionally my mom would join him on the road.
Grandma Mac stayed with my brother and I while they were away,
and fishing in our local spots was always on the daily to-do list!

Grandma Mac's cricket bucket captivated my interest.
I did love to fish along side of her,
but was just as content to sit and watch the crickets.
I was fascinated that no matter how they crawled,
(and they were busy little fellas), they couldn't escape the bucket.

Watching the crickets also occupied me, keeping me quiet.

Grandma was fun and loved to talk,
but fishing was serious business and commanded silence,
....heaven forbid we scared the fish! ;)

The old cricket bucket might appear crude and not worth much.
But it transports me back to happy, carefree times.

...oh to be young again,
and unaware of the ugliness and darkness of this world,
as we've witnessed just this last week in our country,
 ..."sigh"...

Thanks for visiting!
Would love for you to share something you collect that has nostalgic ties to it!
...do tell!  :)

  1. What a fun grandmother! I would not be able to touch a worm or a cricket, but my grandsons sure would love it if I'd fish with them! Great memories, and I love your fish plates and beautiful setting!

  3. Rhonda, this brought back so many wonderful memories of fishing days with my grandfather. He also raised fishing worms; and had a cricket bucket just like that! We would ride in his Chevy pickup to the lake and had the best times together.

  5. I had a favorite grandmother ~ "Mama" ~ she was my mother's mother. I would have gladly lived with her if I could have. She passed away in the 60's but I think of her daily. She was absolutely wonderful! We did a lot of things together and I treasure the memories.

I've never heard of a cricket bucket ~ :) I love that you shared this with us! My Dad was quite the fisherman and I always enjoyed it. Your table looks beautiful! The dishes are perfect.

  10. Rhonda, I loved this story. It brought me back to my childhood and my own Grandmother. She was the sweetest woman I ever knew, died when I was 10 and I missed her so very much as we lived with her. I love your table, what is in the cricket bucket? I also laughed out loud at the fish S and P!!!I, too, have been so, so sad by the events of last week. Such senseless violence. I wish we could go back to easier times too. XO, Pinky

  20. Beautiful table Rhonda, and I loved hearing about fishing with your Mom and Grandma. My Grandfather is the one who taught me how to fish and digging for worms was always part of the fun or going to the bait and tackle shop.

Cuz they also sold candy. LOL
