Hark The Herald the {Upcycled} Angel Sings

Monday, November 9, 2015

As much as I love and adore fall,
I'm suddenly over pumpkins, cornstalks, and the rich hues of the season.

A couple of days ago, a 78' Norway Spruce
made it's way to Rockefeller Center Plaza in New York City.

2015 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree

A tradition since 1933,
as soon as I see on the telly, that massive evergreen raised,
it's game on for me, and I'm ready to get my Christmas on.
...and up!

Unfortunately, I'll have to hold off for a few more days.
I'm knee deep cleaning, organizing, and painting my son's room.
Ten years of little-boy-turned-teen stuff has me bogged,
not certain there is an end in sight!  ha!

I couldn't share a picture inside the room,
just a portion of what has been taken out in the hallway.
I didn't want to cause ya'll the anxiety I'm experiencing!

But I have been planning
and working on a few Christmas projects in between.

Back in the summer,
Ashley and I popped into Dorcas Ministries Thrift Shop in Cary.

I spotted the wood angel, below....

Only $3.00, wasn't sure what I would do with it at the time,
but was certain it could be upcycled and restored to a glorious sight.
...just as angels should be!  :)

The glued-on moss wasn't a deterrent, just a minor set-back!
It popped off easier than I thought it might.

At first, I planned to hang a vintage looking heart locket from the peg
that held the front piece in place, that I removed.

I ditched that idea, thinking it might be too busy combined with the other pieces
I'd assembled to embellish the project.

As much as I strategize before I begin a project,
my plans are most often altered several times before it's complete.
It's a surprise, even to me, how something will turn out!

Off went the peg...

Since I was running really low on Annie Sloan Old White,
I painted the angel with a couple of coats of primer first.

When Mr. Ramblings and I went to the Annual Labor Day Flea Market in Hillsville, Va.,
on my list, were old, odd pieces to add to the angel.

Found these at two different vendors... cheap!
Can't beat cheap unless it's free!

Friday, I found the spool of ribbon at the Holly Day Fair in Fayetteville, NC,
in the clearance basket at a booth, for a $1.00, (original price $8.00).

The large pearl and rhinestone button came from my vintage rhinestone collected stash.

After the paint dried, the angel was lightly distressed and sealed with AS Clear Wax.
The embellishments were glued in place with E6000.

And here the angel sits in all her newly refurbished, upcycled glory!
Pretty cute, huh?

So getting back to the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree...
Do you ever wonder what happens to the tree once it's taken down?

The majestic tree will be milled into lumber for Habitat For Humanity.

Thanks for stopping by!
Hope your week's off to a great start!  :)
~Rhonda
