A Tale of Two Chairs

Monday, July 30, 2012

This is a post about two old sad, ugly, stinky chairs found at an auction...

One chair was in it's original state,
albeit, a little less for the wear.

And a makeover had begun on the second chair,
but hadn't gotten much further than a change of color...

The two chairs, were given new life, along with two tables.
Also auction buys, from a long time ago!

The brown wood chair was painted AS Duck Egg Blue.

The white chair,
was transformed with AS Old White paint,
with a yellowish inset.

The vintage end table
was painted with a mix of AS Old White and Valspar Yellow, from a sample pot.
The hardware had such character, it remained in it's original state.

At some point along the years, this chair must have gotten a little wet!
To rid of the cushion of it's unpleasant musky smell,
several all layers of upholstery had to be removed and the foam left to air for a time.

It was replaced with the Chinese inspired beautiful, bright floral printed  fabric
by Braemore (Soil & Stain Repellent).

The blue chair was given a new cushion of Nautical Shells,
by P Kaufmann (also Soil & Stain Repellent).

The antique white farm side table was painted months ago,
to use for display in my CCPM's booth.

But being only one color, AS Old White, it lacked character, ...sadly boring.
The yellow mix used on the end table, in a slightly lighter shade, was added to the top and bottom tier.

The two chairs, and two tables,
all received a protective top coating of Minwax Wipe-On Poly,
in Clear Satin,
because this Picasso hasn't quite gotten the hang of AS Wax, yet! ha!

The two chairs, and two tables,
will hopefully find a new home soon!
For now, they reside in my new, second booth at
Lou's Flower World
Garden Center & Florist,
in Wilmington, NC.

And as for me, I'm in search of my next project!
Have brush ...will paint! :)

She Sells Seashells...

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

On a recent thriftin' outing,
I found the super cute wood Mermaid ....

...and a tub of collected seashells.

The Mermaid was sporting a sticker of $40.00 from when she was brand new,
but I got her second-hand for $1.99, and the shells were 99 cents!
Both were found at the local Salvation Army Thrift.
What a totally "nauti-deal!" :)

Isn't she just a sexy thing with that star string 'kini,
and jeweled "hair!"

Sure hope others think so,
she'll be available in my booth at The Carolina Country Peddlers Mall.

No detail was overlooked, including the pink starfish base.

The shells were an interesting mix,
...someone's vacation collection, I'm sure!

Each worn, with character,
a story to tell of their journey in the sea!

AND
I have exciting news!!!

The $2.00 auction chair below.....

Got a new "nauti-transformation" of it's own!
A coat of AS Duck Egg Blue
and new cushion of beautiful shells,
...and will available in my booth at my SECOND location!

That's right
on Monday, I'll be moving into a booth at
Lou's Flower World - Garden Center & Florist, in Wilmington.

I'm busy painting small furniture pieces like crazy,
and lovin' it! :)

{The lighting was off in the picture,
 the fabric and paint are much more similar in color than they appear in the photo!}

"She sells seashells by the seashore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I'm sure she sells seashore shells."

You Never Know What You Will See...

Sunday, July 22, 2012

...when traveling along the backroads!

Thursday, we set out for a whirlwind two-day road trip,
a mixture of business, pleasure, and to attend the out-of-town funeral for one of my best friend's dad.
We covered many miles, from the upper coast of NC, the Inner Banks, onto Rocky Mount, down to Raleigh, spending the night in Burlington, and around to the Piedmont Region.

Imagine our surprise,
as we stumbled onto the over 6000 square foot house below, around Alamance, NC.
It was one of those,
"did I just see what I think I saw, make a u-turn, as I grab my camera," kind of moment!!!
Good thing I was riding shot-gun that day, so I focus of taking pictures! :)

A vinyl siding man's dream, ha!

Those of you who read my blog,
know I am all for repurposing and salvaging stuff.
And the owners of this home have preserved many a relic in this creation!

I googled the home, which is on Alamance Church Road, not far from I-85,
and found that the home was originally built in 1895, having only one bathroom.
It sold in 1995, for $39,000.

Click HERE for the web article.

Intricate Woodwork and Old Stain Glass...

Eclectic Mix of Statuary...

As far as we could tell, the home stands empty.
Interesting, huh???

On the way home, we stopped off in Downtown Sanford,
which contains many quaint little shops and several antique malls.
Due to the time, we only had a short while to browse through one,
The Sanford Antique Mall on Sth Moore Street.

I was tickled to find the vintage scale, below,
for $18.00, which I thought was a steal ...until I looked on ebay!
It was a fair deal, considering I didn't have to pay shipping,
but nonetheless, I'm sure I'll enjoy it once I unpack and find a new home for it!  :)

Stay tuned, I have more road trip adventures to share!
We packed a lot in a short two days!

Blogging Break...

Saturday, July 14, 2012

...or a week, or so!

Wish I was destined for a fabulous vaca'
...in sight of lush green palm trees and crystal clear blue waters!
"sigh..."

Instead, I'll be playing catch-up all week!
...be back soon! :)

When I Grow Up...

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

...I want to be a Junk Gypsy,
just like
Jolie and Amie Sikes!

Have you seen their new show on HGTV???
Every Saturday night, at 7 pm,
I sit transfixed in front of the TV for a 30 minute glimpse at my dream life!
I'm not stalking them or anything, but I believe we could seriously be BFF's! ha! :)

Junk Gypsies {and Design Star}, are about the only shows I watch on HGTV anymore.
I mean, seriously...
how many hours can you possibly watch "Love It or List It" and HOUSE HUNTERS????

geeeesshhh...that gets a little monotonous! ha!

Anyhow, off of my HGTV soapbox,
and back to Junk Gypsies...

Amie and Jolie hail from Texas,
and started their career of junkin' with meager funds.
How inspiring considering the success this talented and super cute sister duo now share.

To truly make a good career of doing something you love, how awesome is that?!?  :)

Maybe some of you have been fortunate to shop in their junkin' booths at antique shows.

I'm impressed at the cool junk they find!
Junkin' heaven, I'm telling you!

And if you watch the show,
you can witness them transform ordinary junk into one-of-a-kind masterpieces!

On their show, they transform rooms,
but how about hosting a wedding reception for
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton!

I'll say it again, the girls are living my life! ha! :)

For the Shelton's reception,
they also set up a VIP lounge in an Airstream Camper...

...of course, decorated with cool junkin' finds!

So...
in the meantime, I suppose I'll stick to my little 8x10 booth
at the local Antique Mall -- dabbling in my junk!

...and practice the Sikes Sister's saying...
"Hush Honey, this is good stuff!"
I'm country southern, so I already have the accent down!

...besides, it's not all about the fame, it's all about the fun of junkin'! :)

Scoping the Globe...

Sunday, July 8, 2012

For the past month,
I've been scoping the globe,
at least my little part of it...
and  to no avail have I found any good junk to resale in my booth.
I was getting a tad worried with the junkin' drought I'd encountered.

I suppose it's just too hot in our parts,
for anyone to be cleaning out closets and hauling their goods to the thrift stores,
let alone have a yard sale in the oppressive heat!

But over the last week,
my luck seems to have changed.

I hit a few good yard sales in our area,
{three to be exact! ha!}
and picked up some interesting finds at the local thrift stores.

The burlap handmade doll is the real deal.
Authentic old tobacco sheet burlap, found at an estate yard sale.

And I just love the dog statue, below.
...one of my favorite finds of the week.

He's made of a heavy resin material,
but has a bronze look!

An interesting old picture...

A George F. Cram Co. Globe,
and clean, like-new wicker large tray...

The milk glass cup and saucer set was made in France,
by Arcopal .
Really pretty, this was a name I wasn't familiar with.

The beautiful red scarf, was a SA find!

And a midst a table of nothing but dollar store junk at a yard sale, so not the good junk,
I found the great mod orange daisy print Sugar, Salt and Pepper set below for 75 cents!!!

I scanned the sale so quickly, I almost missed it!

The large battenburg lace tablecloth and ten napkins
is in pristine condition!

It was starched, straight from the cleaners,
and the saleslady at the SA started bundling it up to stuff in a bag
before I could stop her!
I cringed as I counted the wrinkles! :(
Still a super deal, at $4.99 for the set!

At the estate yard sale,
I also found the old ladder, tobacco basket,
and two sets of mule harnesses and single tree.
Got it all for $40!

Not bad for a week's search, if I do say so myself!
And the prices were good, can't beat that!

As I was unwrapping my wares when I got home,
which is just like Christmas to me,
I found that someone has been passing the hot days
with the puzzles in the paper.
I'm ashamed to say, I've never seen one completed! ha!
I was impressed! :)
