A Thrifty Bench Makeover & Other Mid-Week Finds at the Local Flea

Friday, September 18, 2015

This past Tuesday, I dropped into our local thrift store for a quick walk-through,
and found the ceramic column candlestick, pictured below.

As I was running other errands, I happened by the way of the outdoor Flea Market.
A few vendors were set up.
Not what you'd expect mid-week...
but it was a beautiful day, and the temps were nice.
I suppose they were taking advantage of the weather!

From across four lanes of traffic,
I spotted the bench below, and made a circle around the block so I could check it out!

I've developed a real fondness for bamboo inspired pieces.

The vendor named his price for the bench... $10.
I was so tickled, I didn't even haggle on the price!
If you know me well, you know that's a rarity.

He also had some really pretty small glassware pieces, and I snagged a few of those.

Everything I bought, including the candlestick at the thrift store and the bench,
was under $18.00... what a deal, right?

When I saw the bench,
I knew instantly that I had just the place for it at the lake house.

But before I delivered it,
it would need a fresh coat of paint and new fabric for the cushion... easy enough!

It felt nice to have a paint brush in my hand again.
It's been awhile, ...since I "retired" from my junk business in June.

Painted the bench Annie Sloan Provence,
and covered the cushion with fabric I had on hand.

The column candlestick was spray painted slate gray,
then dry brushed with Annie Sloan Old White.
It makes a perfect pedestal for a pretty pumpkin!

I also adore pineapples.
Very few things "say southern" like sweet tea, pearls, magnolia blossoms,
  ...and pineapples!
After all, pineapples are the long-standing symbol of hospitality,
with rich historical significance dating back to the colonial days!

I was thrilled to find the crystal pineapple holders from the flea market vendor!
He just made my day, bless his little old heart!  :)

The silver tray was a thrift store find from another day,
and probably another town... best I can remember!

The little bowl/vase was a sweet find, too!
The pretty yellow wildflowers were picked from a roadside ditch bank.

I went a little overboard playing around with my camera
trying different settings, and different combinations of pieces.
Indulge me, the next few pictures are just random shots!  :)

I would really like to take a photography class at the local community college.
Photography both fascinates and overwhelms me!

I do hope the weather is just as glorious in your neck of the woods!
Enjoy your weekend, friends...
~Rhonda

  3. Love the remake of the bench! It looks adorable! Your photos are great...it looks like you've mastered depth of field in some of the shots. Photography fascinates me and I've been shooting for about 25 years...still miss the darkroom terribly though. Just remember, aperture and shutter speed are your friend when controlling light! :-) I presume these shots were taken at your lake house...love that moss hanging down...sooooo southern and beautiful!
